The role (AI-first, staff-level)
We’re hiring a Staff Product Designer who is AI-first by default and operates with extreme leverage.
You’ll own design end-to-end across Braintrust AIR and our AI-powered recruiting and marketplace products. This is not a support role and not a slow, process-heavy design environment. You are expected to move materially faster than traditional design teams by using advanced AI tools to compress discovery, ideation, and execution cycles.
This role is scoped and compensated at a staff level because the expectation is outsized impact:
- You set design direction, not just execute screens
- You use AI to increase speed and quality simultaneously
- You simplify complex, AI-driven systems into intuitive workflows
- You materially increase product velocity through leverage
If you are not already using AI daily as a core part of your design workflow, this role will not be a fit.
What you’ll own
You will be the design owner across:
- Braintrust AIR — AI interviewing and candidate evaluation
- Enterprise Staffing Marketplace + Data Labeling
No layers. You work directly with Product, Engineering, and GTM teams to design, ship, learn, and iterate fast.
Why this is a staff-level role
Braintrust builds AI-native products for complex operational workflows (hiring, evaluation, onboarding, marketplaces). The hard problems here are not visual polish — they’re about clarity, trust, speed, and decision-making at scale.
This role exists to:
- Turn AI complexity into obvious user value
- Design workflows that feel dramatically better than legacy tools
- Increase product velocity by pairing human judgment with AI acceleration
- Establish design standards that scale across multiple products
Responsibilities
A) Staff-level design ownership
You will:
- Own design strategy and execution across multiple AI-powered products
- Translate ambiguous product problems into clear UX direction
- Design scalable, data-dense B2B workflows
- Act as the primary design decision-maker on major initiatives
B) High-velocity discovery & delivery (AI-powered)
Speed is a core performance metric.
You will:
- Run fast discovery cycles using AI-assisted research, synthesis, and ideation
- Rapidly explore and compare multiple UX directions before converging
- Prototype, test, and iterate aggressively to reach the right answer quickly
- Partner tightly with PMs and engineers to reduce idea → ship cycle time
C) UI systems & execution excellence
You will:
- Produce clean, modern, high-fidelity UI ready for engineering handoff
- Own complex interactions and workflows, not just surface-level UI
- Evolve and maintain our design system to support speed and consistency
- Ensure clarity, hierarchy, and usability across products
D) Cross-functional leadership (no people management)
As a Staff IC, your influence is horizontal.
You will:
- Collaborate deeply with Product, Engineering, and customer-facing teams
- Influence roadmap and scope through strong design judgment
- Raise the bar for design quality and velocity across the org
What success looks like
First 30 days
- Deep understanding of AIR and marketplace workflows
- Shipping meaningful improvements using AI-accelerated workflows
- Clear POV on where design can most increase speed and adoption
Days 31–90
- Noticeable increase in design velocity and iteration speed
- Major AI-driven workflows redesigned or materially improved
- Design patterns and systems that reduce friction for PMs and engineers
Required experience
1) Senior / staff-level product design
- 7+ years of product design experience
- Ownership of major product areas or end-to-end experiences
- Strong portfolio demonstrating modern, simple UI for complex systems
- Comfort being the most senior design voice on a product
2) AI-first design practice (hard requirement)
You are already strong in:
- AI-assisted research synthesis and UX exploration
- Rapid ideation and iteration using AI tools
- Leveraging AI to explore edge cases and alternatives quickly
- Using AI to increase output and decision quality, not just speed
This role is explicitly evaluated on leverage gained through AI usage.
3) Systems thinking & execution
- Strong intuition for simplifying complex, data-heavy workflows
- Experience with B2B or operational software
- Expert-level Figma skills (systems, prototyping, dev-ready files)
- End-to-end design ownership: research → UX → UI → iteration
Nice-to-haves
- Experience designing AI-enabled products
- Background in recruiting, staffing, marketplaces, or HR tech
- Experience with evaluation systems or operational tooling
